Welcome to Session 4 for First Eucharist!
Please go through the lesson together with your child. It is due March 20. You will need the Blessed First Communion book and a pencil. You may want to have the Praying the Mass booklet nearby so that your child can find the prayers in the booklet during this lesson.
Don't forget turn in this session by having your child complete the short Google Form at the end of the lesson (scroll down).
- Begin with the Sign of the Cross, and pray the prayer on page 111 together.
Food for the Soul
- Watch the Episode 1 together:
- Read pgs 112 - 113 together.
- Ask: "Sarah mentioned six ways to feed your soul. What are they?" (Word of God, the Eucharist, prayer, service, scripture, and our faith community).
The Liturgy of the Eucharist
- Watch Episode 2 together. Use the Praying the Mass booklet to follow along with the prayers during this section.
The Offertory
- Read pages 116 - 117 together.
- Ask your child how God could help them in their life this week and have them write this in their book (see the bottom of page 116 if they need help). Remind them to ask God for this help during the offertory at Mass on Sunday.
The Eucharistic Prayer
- Read pages 118 - 119 together.
- Ask: " What is the most important part of the Mass? Why?" (The Eucharistic Prayer; because this is when Jesus comes to be with us)
The Consecration
- Read pages 120 - 121 together.
- Have your child look at the picture. Ask if they know which scene this is from in the Bible? (Jesus' entrance into Jerusalem the week He is killed. We remember this day on Palm Sunday). Explain that when Jesus entered Jerusalem the people laid palm branches down and shouted "Hosanna to the Son of David. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; hosanna in the highest." You can find this in Matthew 21:9.
- Point out the words of consecration at the bottom of page 121, and tell your child that this is when they hear the bells ring at Mass.
The Our Father
- Read pages 122 - 123 together, and pray the Our Father together.
Holy Communion
- Watch episode 3 together.
- Read pages 124 - 127 together.
- Have your child repeat the last sentence on page 125. Ask them how it feels to say those words.
- Ask your child if they have any questions about what it will be like to receive Jesus for the first time in the Eucharist. Tell them what you remember about your First Communion.
The True Presence
- Watch episode 4 together.
- Read pages 128 - 129. Share with your child your own amazement about the Eucharistic miracle of Lanciano.
From the Bible: The Last Supper
- Watch episode 5 together:
- Read pages 130-131 together.
- Ask: "What do you think the disciples were feeling during the Last Supper? Nervous, excited, confused, grateful, etc."
Jesus is in You
- Watch episode 6 together:
- Read pages 132 - 133 together. If you have a special way of praying after Communion, share that with your child.
The Concluding Rites
- Read pages 134 - 135 together, and help your child find the Concluding Rites in the Praying the Mass booklet.
- Ask: "After you are sent forth from Mass, how can you share your blessings with others?" (help a friend with homework, make a thank you card for my parent/grandparent, do chores without being asked, etc.)
Closing Prayer
- Read pages 140 - 141 together or watch Episode 7 below.
- Ask your child: “What are some of the most important things you learned in this lesson?” (Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist, the Eucharist is food for our souls and should never be taken for granted, I am blessed to be a Catholic, etc.)
